Un Nuevo Clásico Para el 150 Aniversario. The Romeo y Julieta Amantes
The Romeo y Julieta Amantes is a beautifully crafted 150th-anniversary release that delivers an exceptional smoking experience with impeccable construction and remarkable aging potential.
Hello dear reader,
We meet again and this time I want to share with you my experience with a fresh new Habanos release.
Some cigars arrive with grand expectations, and the Romeo y Julieta Amantes is certainly one of them. Released to commemorate the brand’s 150th anniversary, this Sobresalientes vitola (53x153) debuted at the Habanos Festival XXV, setting the stage for what promises to be an essential addition to the Romeo y Julieta portfolio.
I had the opportunity to enjoy the Amantes during the festival and I also enjoyed it once I got back home, especially to create this review, and from the first draw to the final moments, it became clear—this is a great release, a cigar with tremendous amounts of potential.
Appearance & Construction
Visually, the Amantes is gorgeous. The wrapper is a light brown with a slightly oily sheen, a signature of well-selected Cuban tobacco. The cigar feels perfectly packed, firm but not rigid, and the footband adds a touch of elegance while ensuring extra protection.
The craftsmanship here is flawless, a cigar made to impress before you even light it.
Cold Draw & First Light
Before lighting up, I took a cold draw, and it was immediately promising. Notes of clove and cinnamon came through, offering a soft, fragrant spice that lingered on the palate. The draw was perfect, an effortless balance between resistance and airflow, exactly what you want in a cigar of this caliber.
Upon lighting up, the first puffs delivered soft spice, mild coffee, and a refined smoothness. The intensity sat in the mild to medium range, exactly where you’d expect a Romeo y Julieta to start.
Flavors & Evolution
As the Amantes progressed, so did its depth. The sweetness intensified, and the cigar built up to a solid medium-bodied profile. The initial soft spice and coffee notes remained but took on a richer, rounder quality, making each draw more satisfying than the last.
This is where Romeo y Julieta shines, balance and refinement. No sharp transitions, no unexpected spikes in strength, just a harmonious journey of flavors that become more pronounced as you go.
Toward the final moments, a hint of harshness appeared, but this was expected given the freshness of the cigar. This small bite was not a flaw, it was a sign of incredible aging potential. With six months to a year in the humidor, I am certain the Amantes will transform into something truly exceptional.
Burn & Draw Performance
Everything about the Amantes' construction translated into an effortless smoking experience. The burn line was razor-sharp, the draw remained consistent, and the ash held impressively well. A truly well-crafted cigar from start to finish.
Pairing Recommendations
For this smoke, my pairing of choice was coffee, and it was absolutely beautiful. The natural sweetness of the cigar complemented the richness of a perfect cortado, creating an experience that felt entirely in sync.
For those looking for an evening pairing, Cuban rum would be an excellent match, enhancing the sweetness while bringing out more of the cigar’s subtle spice and creaminess.
Some cigars earn their spot on that special part of the humidor, and the Romeo y Julieta Amantes is one of them. A worthy addition to the brand’s legendary lineup, this cigar embodies everything aficionados love about Romeo y Julieta … balance, elegance, and refinement.
It is already fantastic fresh, but I can’t wait to smoke it again with some age. With six months to a year of rest, I expect it will develop even more depth and smoothness, making it one of the standout releases of the year.
For those who love the Wide Churchill, this is a cigar you need to try.
Wishing you rich flavors and good company, until we meet again.
